Anyway, pota pala talaga itong THE Film Critic ng Pilipinas (and if somebody stumbles on our website, I'm being sarcastic). At me nagcomment pang isang pota, na kesehodang I may not have a deeper understanding of the genre (Horror). Eto bale ang comment ng potanginang paksiyet na ito(incidentally not the critic, but somebody who licks his ass I guess):

Massimo Dallamano's What Have You Done To Solange?

Eh, Argento. I'm trying to think if I saw anything of his besides Suspiria, but I can't recall. I like the wink, along with the edge and sensuality that's inherent in De Palma's films, even in an out-and-out shocker like Sisters. I happened to like Femme Fatale but that's me and to call it trash and a bomb is to not really, in my opinion, understand the horror genre. It is by definition drama first, an underlying story about a relationship; even when the story involves an inanimate object like a house (such as in The Haunting) or a car, or center around an animal. It shouldn't be confused with sub-genres like Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm Street slasher films. You could argue Halloween as a slasher movie, but its got great drama at the heart of the story. I rented Blow Out a couple of weeks ago and was still moved by it, especially as you said Noel, the last few minutes: "Yeah, it's a great scream ... a great scream."

I guess, this person has not been reading his books lately. Horror, tries to instill fear in its viewers. Basically, fear of the unknown. In the movies, Horror has cut across a lot of borders and lines. And as we know it, there are a lot of subgenres. This person, whoever he is, clearly shows his ignorance and biases towards what seem to be the accepted framework of what a horror movie is or should be.

Critic has also noted that by crediting previous director in movies is like providing a Cliff's notes. He actually missed the whole boat on the whole Brian de Palma shebang. There were or are instances where de Palma has denied that Hitchcock ever had influence on him. And there were instances that he dismisses Argento as a hack. I guess, as a plagiarist, he has the galls to say this. Should I discuss the movie (Femme Fatale) in a detailed form here? I guess not. I have seen the movie, and I think it cinematic trash. The whole camera gimmicks are there, but the whole thing is such an overdone gimmick. Stamos, if her life depended on it, can not act. And Banderas, what else can be said about him that has not been said?

Nowhere are they scholars of Film or do they have a basic understanding of the rudiments of drama, and they had the gall! Poke!

Lucio Fulci's New York Ripper.

My gulay, I'm better off reading a film scholar's review. Mind you, a review. Not this person's short sighted opinions, and it mystifies me why people believe his preenings and posturings. Some people, I guess, make others do the thinking for them. It would make everything easier.

Anyway... As in malaking ANYWAY, gamay ko na naman ang giallo subgenre at horror kaya pota siya kung ookrayin niya ako ano. Para akong affected masyado ano? Well, slight lang.

Kasi 3/4 of the people there eh kulang ng iodine at IQ.

  • Ay. I take that back, hindi siya isang critic. Kasi to be a critic eh meron kang sinusundang mga theoretical framework which "Reviewer" (I'll call him reviewer from now on) has failed to provide.

And besides, sa next year pa ito. Todo na to! Anyway, para nga naman mas bongga ang adventure (as opposed to walking from CCP to UP, na ginagawa naman natin nakajeep nga lang). Malay natin, magkaroon tayo ng Zen Enlightenment. Dava?

  • Tangina Joel parang ayoko ata sumama sa pilgrimage na yan hanggang um, ano ba yan, Bicol? Shite lola, PNR train?! Eek! I don't need Zen enlightenment. I am already enlightened. Haha. Marami-rami na rin akong napagdaanan and I don't think I really need to walk the earth ala Samuel Jackson's character in Pulp Fiction to see the light. So you know, pass ako dyan ha. Kayo na lang po ni Bb. Jose. Good luck! ;)

So, di ba?

Bukas pala eh magugulay kami ulit. Nakakatamad kasi magluto minsan (kaya puro adobong liempo ever or kung ano). As in para talaga akong lalagnatin ngayong gabi.

  • Gaga, napaisip ako dun sa comment mo na Re: Brian de Palma getting the meat from Italian horror movies. Gaga, confirmed na thru netsurfing na halos kinuha niya ang mga pinakamagagandang set pieces from Italian gialli(ah, the wonders of the internet and the wonders of people who are geekier than I am). I guess, it takes a lot of understanding of the whole genre to appreciate the masters of Italian horror. Iniisip ko kung eto ba iyons sinasabi mong visual wit, kaya lang in Brian de Palma's case it's too much of a coincidence that he has taken a lot from the Italian gialli to believe it is that (a coincidence).
