In Newsweek's December 31, 2001 issue, Mathieu Kassovitz was featured along with a few other talented individuals for being Renaissance men/women in their respective fields. I only found the French summary, and here it is:

Dans l'édition parue ce lundi 31 décembre, l'acteur et réalisateur français est désigné comme "représentant la réponse du cinéma moderne à l'homme de la Renaissance". Dans cette liste de personnalités, il côtoie notamment le vice-président chinois Hu Jintao, le lieutenant-général de l'US Air Force Charles Wald ou la présidente de l'Institut américain pour la recherche sur le génome (TIGR) Claire Fraser.
