Last weekend we saw the animated hour-long philosophical gab fest Waking Life (2001, written/directed by Richard Linklater, who also did Dazed and Confused, Slackers, and Before Sunrise) on Star Movies at 3am. Why do these cable channels show the more interesting films at these ungodly hours?! We saw parts of Hedwig and the Angry Inch on HBO at ungodly hours last year too.
I was really sleepy but hung on cos the animation (which took a year to make) was awesome. The film was shot first in live action, then rendered in animation. Think posterized, Photoshopped images-- in dreamy colors-- in motion. The philo babble (some taken from textbooks, some the opinions of the actors and director, one part a Philip K. Dick monologue) lost me a few times, but it's a love it or hate it kind of film.
I liked it, but man, most of the film features talking heads; they're just middle class intellectual types (or intellectual wannabes, or crazies) ruminating the nature of life and reality and such, they're barely doing any concrete things! But the animation and orchestra score kicked ass. Makes for a trippy, unique, out-of-this-world film experience. Best viewed while stoned, according to my sis, who bailed out 30 minutes into it.
