A matter of taste
Hey! The good thing about cinema, or most culture/lifestyle stuff, or art, is that there's really no set-in-stone formulas, or correct way to do things. It's not like math or science. So I'm not saying putting rape scenes in movies is wrong, it's just that I don't like 'em. Just my humble opinion. ;) Just my preference. I don't like them because I think most scenes of this sort out there are exploitative and self-indulgent. Am not into too much "auteur", "connoisseur", exclusive, inaccessible types of films.
Oh, and I didn't ignore your post; I even edited the spacing and the pics to make the layout in the site more even. But I might choose to ignore the films. Simply cos it's not my thing. Am not into splatter horror or depravity or too much heavy stuff. I mean, Malena may be tame to you guys, but watching it once was enough for me. It was a good film, but I didn't find enjoyment watching the scene where all the women ganged up on her in the plaza. Who did? Obviously no one was meant to enjoy it, but I don't want to get my own copy of that film to view it again.
Some people think violence or rape on film is funny; I don't. Portray it in a ridiculous, over-the-top manner and chances are I still wouldn't find it funny. I'd be impatient with it and just choose to do something else. Like A Clockwork Orange, jeez did that film raise my hackles. Dunno why it's a classic, don't care. A friend said it was a total misreading of the Anthony Burgess novel. Maybe that's why I didn't appreciate it. Maybe the author meant to portray the future differently. But who knows, if I change my mind I might give it a whirl.
So you like certain kinds of films, and I like other kinds. Sometimes we like the same films. If you guys wanna watch Irreversible, maybe I can take a look at it too. But if that fucking frenetic camerawork gives me a headache, I might go do something else. ;)
