some excerpts:

- I read the stories. I found both to be strong in structure, well-written and quite sophisticated. I had a problem precisely with that level of sophistication, as it seemed to me that these stories could be placed anywhere in the world. Were it not for proper nouns, I would be hard put to identify them as Philippine.

- I would ask for more specificity; most great literary pieces are specific to time, culture and place. One reads Marquez and knows immediately he writes of Latin America. But otherwise, I enjoyed the stories,"Regularized" more than "Classical Strain."

- I hope you have kept on writing -- or managed to do so. The trouble with writing is that it is totally unnecessary to existence, unlike breathing; hence, it's easy to put it off.

- There are two sofas in my living room, to accommodate a constant flow of visitors. You're welcome to one of them.

she also said i can email her anytime and gave her home phone number. she'll be in manila this june. imagine, my folder of 2 stories (i hadn't written "nadir" at the time yet) actually followed her around the world, from manila to europe to across the US. she only unpacked all her stuff recently and saw my folder. i'd totally forgotten about it. but am touched she actually read my stuff and emailed me her thoughts. :)
