Molar Support (my LJ repost)

Tangina! For the second time, I have to have my molar extracted (the first one happened way back in fifth grade). This has been bugging me since Monday. But, today has been especially excruciating. I wasn't even able to snatch a bite. Even a slight brush from my tongue, or when it bumps against my upper molar will send me almost in tears (no joke! My gulay, I'm humbled by a mere toothache! No amount of dirty tricks can make it go away!). So, let's look at my molar (note: that is not the x-ray of my molar, but I'll explain some things over).

I'd rather retain my molar. Pero, it would be better to have a perfect set of teeth.

OH, dear me.... (at Bernice, kapag magkaSTD ka ata sa bibig, you'll have sore throat ata, at hindi ipin ang mananakit...)

Molar ni Joel

The explanation brought to me by a clinician when she had my jaw x-rayed, is that the enamel and the dentin have been damaged too much that the pasta fillings have already made its way almost to the pulp (almost, but not quite. See diagram below). So, last week, when I ate adobong liempo, I don't know what has come over me but like a dog I went and tried to crack the bones (yeah, bad pasttime but I'm no cannibal I tell you, I think human bones would be harder to crack!). I didn't notice that the molar was chipped. I noticed it when I brushed. It felt like my tongue brushed against something sharp. And when I got my mom's compact to look at it, sure enough there was a missing part (the part near my tongue). Anyway, since I never spat out the part, I must have swallowed it. It was not really that uncomfortable, so I waited until Monday. The dentist that I consulted with was the dentist who did the pasta filling before (that was more than a year ago), and she was the one who told me not to chew anything too hard on the side where she did the pasta.

Goody, she was not even a member of Maxicare anymore so I had to pay my way. Anyway, she checked my molar, and went on to drill some parts. And then just like that, (like a jeepney driver: Basta may butas, pasak!) she had it filled out with new fillings. At first, it felt great that my tongue brushed agains something smoother. I was able to sleep, and then when I was about to go to work (I have this illness, when I know that I am about to go to work I go feverish, or my stomach will start to act up. But, this time it was quite different, since it was my molar that acted up), it started to tingle. Apparently, the stinging sensation and the throbbing pain are two different things (according to her). So, I decided to ignore it.

Cross Section ng Molar ni Joel

This Friday afternoon, when I woke up and I tried to eat, I noticed that the pain has become so unbearable I can't even eat rice (day, wala ng ulam ito ha). Geez. Now I really know God favors everyone but me.

Since I love unfunny jokes, I will detail some of the unfunniest wisecracks I have done in my life.

My blockmates and I were in Princess's car, and we were talking about things. I do not exactly remember what we were talking about. I remember it clearly because I cracked a joke, and nobody laughed. This was how the conversation went:

Princess: Uy Joel, me kanta ang TLC (the black trio, patay na si Lisa Left Eye Lopes) para kay Lynette.

Me: Ay talaga? Ano?

Princess: Hulaan mo nga eh.

Me: (racking my brains out) Hindi ko alam eh (wala kasi akong alam sa pop culture minsan). (isip isip pa rin)

Lynette: (I'm not sure if she said something, but I think she said:) Hulaan mo na.

Me: Ah, alam ko na (I proceed to sing), eto ba iyon: Find out who am i, too
Be in a position to make me feel so damn unpretty.

Nobody laughed. They told me that the song TLC sang for Lynette was "Dear Li(y)e."

Geez, how was I to know?

Next on the list: I usually attend the Writers' Night at the UP. They hold it in December. I attend because most of the time, my writer-friends are there, and we do get to brush up on our writerly (kuno) lives. Anyway, my friend Jane was talking to her fellows in the UP Workshop (don't ask about the year, I don't remember) and she was holding a folio. The Ateneo Heights, or something (day, maganda ang itsura, I forgot kung nagandahan ba ako sa content.

Me: Hey Jane! Ano iyan? (pointing to the folio)

Jane: Ah. Folio ng Ateneo Heights. (proceeds to introduce me to two of her friends)

Me: (grabbing the folio) Ay patingin. (then I flipped the pages, and then read some entries... After reading an entry I laughed)

Friend of Jane 1: Why are you laughing?

Friend of Jane 2: YEah, why are you laughing?

Me: (I instantly assumed that neither of them were the person that I was laughing at... Flipped to the page where it was written: E. Calabia Samar)... Don't you think his name is funny? Di ba ano, labia is pepe? Hahahaha!!! Labia labia.

(again, nobody laughed. sensing the inappropriateness, and the awkwardness, since friend 1 and 2 were gawking at each other) Ay sandali. Syet. (turns to small guy) Ikaw ba ito? Oh my gulay.

Friend 2: Ahm... Oo, ako nga iyan.

Me: Syet, sorry. Pero... pero, nakakatawa naman di ba? Labia, labia?

Hay, me and my unfunny jokes talaga.

Weirder, and weirder. These songs are aimed at the clubgoing public (minus me, of course), voice is languid. But, I think, her songs (instruments, programming) are too layered and too smart for pedestrians. Oh well. You can't win them all, I say.

  • actually these jokes are pretty funny. i laughed aloud while reading em. syemps na-kwento mo na before yung 'labia' at writers night. hahaha. pero yung 'dear lie' sa car ni princess ngayon ko lang nalaman. nakakatawa ito for us, pero kung ikaw yung taong nabanggit o natamaan sa joke, hindi nga siguro nakakatawa. ;)

and i also laughed at the image of you chewing bones of adobong liempo, like my dog dino. hahaha :-D hope your tooth gets better soon. and it costs Php6 k for a tooth operation?! fak. oh, and i was only joking about that STD, of course.

  • i also have a few goldfrapp mp3s. ok naman. but they're not my faves. yeah they're pretty polished tracks. i don't get to listen to my mp3s anymore cos my PC at work got demoted and am (for the rest of this year... next year pa magkaka-budget uli department namin to get a new better PC for me) assigned to this crappy 800 x 600 monitor PC (na super dark ang monitor at masakit sa mata) that doesn't have a working soundcard. fak. so ayun, jurassic discman ang pinapakinggan ko at work, nakasaksak sa 110 volts na AVR kasi galing sa US. 7 or 8 years old na ata yung discman kong yun. but at least i get to listen to my other CDs again. revisiting them, so to speak.

  • hahaha, mahal mo yung building namin cos of the wonderful booksale branch? i should actually visit that booksale more often. prob is, mauubos pera ko dun so hinay-hinay na lang.

gosh lola, can you share some of your secrets or 'writing methods' para maging prolific naman din kami? i don't wanna have to lug around a security guard-type logbook all the time, but really, what keeps you going and writing all these plays and stuff? you write 2 or 3 at the same time, right? i can only focus on a story at a time. so what's your writing method or habit? :)
